People in the northern coastal state of Andhra Pradesh were shocked by earthquakes that lasted for a few seconds in the early hours of Tuesday (November 4, 2025). Confirming this, officials said the tremors were the result of a magnitude 4 earthquake recorded near G Madjula in Alluri Sitarama Raju district. This may be the epicenter of the earthquakes in the northern coastal Andhra Pradesh region.

“On 4 November 2025, at 4.19.41 AM, an earthquake was recorded at a depth of 10 km. This is a minor, low-intensity earthquake. Cracks in roads and buildings usually start appearing in earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or above, but it largely depends on several factors. In G Madjula's case, it may not be that big. Due to this, the tremors were felt only in surrounding areas like Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram And Srikakulam,” India Meteorological Department (IMD) (Amaravati) Director S. Stella told The Hindu.

She also said road damage could occur with magnitude 5.3 and above, but this is not guaranteed and depends largely on factors such as distance from the epicenter and the specific intensity of the quake. A 5.0-5.4 magnitude earthquake causes light damage. Magnitude 6.0 earthquakes are devastating in a limited area and magnitude 7.0 earthquakes cause greater damage over a wider area.

The extent of cracking in buildings or roads, and sometimes even fatal accidents, depends on several factors, including the depth of the earthquake, local soil conditions and the quality of building structures, said a faculty member and researcher from Andhra University's Department of Earth Sciences.

“I felt some tremors in my bed. I immediately woke up and got up. I didn't feel much,” said R. Jagadish, owner of an eye care center in Madilapalem and resident of BM Palm.

There were no reports of people coming out of their homes, but on Tuesday morning, people in areas like Madhurawada, Maharanipeta, Rushikonda, Kailasapuram, Visalakshinagar, Murali Nagar, Gajuwaka, Gopalapatnam, Simhachalam, Akayapalem and Beach Road faced the same experience.

Incidentally, the tremors were accompanied by thunder and lightning, which sparked panic among a small number of residents. “For a moment I had the impression that the earthquakes had led to an explosion in one of the major industrial units of the city,” said Mr. Srinivas, who resides on Beach Road.
