The King Salman Relief Center intervenes to help survivors of the Afghanistan earthquake

KABUL: The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center is providing aid and basic supplies to residents of northern Afghanistan after a strong earthquake struck the region earlier this week.

At least 27 people were killed and nearly 1,000 others injured when the 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the northern provinces of Samangan, Sar-e-Pul and Balkh on Monday, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Dozens of homes were destroyed and civilian infrastructure was severely damaged, especially in rural areas where emergency support was limited. The earthquakes also destroyed one of the country's most famous mosques, the 15th-century Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif.

While relief agencies and UN teams called for urgent international assistance, warning that many survivors lacked shelter and medical support, the King Salman Relief Center delivered hundreds of tents, blankets and more than 140 tons of food supplies.

“This time, the earthquake has affected many families in Balkh, Samangan and Sar-e-Pul provinces, and we are receiving this round of support from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” said Shihab Uddin Dilawar, Director General of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, upon receiving assistance from Saudi Ambassador Faisal bin Talaq Al-Baqmi in Kabul. “Our thanks and gratitude go to the people and government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and special thanks to the King Salman Relief Center.”

The earthquake in northern Afghanistan comes just three months after a strong earthquake struck the densely populated rural areas of Kunar and Nangarhar provinces in the east of the country in early September. More than 2,200 people were killed and many more injured, with entire villages wiped out.

The response to the September earthquake has strained Afghan emergency and medical services, which are now struggling to deal with the effects of the new disaster.

Abdul Fattah Jawad, director of the Ehsaas Organization for Welfare and Social Services, which is helping with relief efforts, said the situation is “heartbreaking,” especially in Samanjan and Balkh, where hundreds of families have lost everything.

“People are suffering from deep trauma, especially women and children,” Jawad told Arab News. “Most families sleep outdoors for days, in the cold, with barely any shelter. The nights are very cold, and many children are already falling ill.”
