Mild earthquakes shook three regions in Vietnam, but no damage was reported

Quảnh Ngai – A series of mild earthquakes have rocked the northern, central and central highlands of Vietnam over the past two days, worrying residents in Son La, Hue and Quệnh Ngai, but causing no damage.

The latest tremor struck Maang Ri township in Quang Ngai on Saturday morning, measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale and at a depth of about 8 km.

This followed two smaller earthquakes on Friday – one with a magnitude of 3.6 in Son La and another with a magnitude of 4.0 in Hue later that evening.

Nguyen Xuan Anh, director of the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, described the Quang Ngai event as a “trigger earthquake,” likely related to local stress changes in the Earth’s crust rather than major tectonic movement.

Since 2021, scientists have recorded hundreds of small earthquakes throughout the area that was historically part of Kon Tum, especially around the Kon Plong area (now part of Quang Ngai).

The strongest earthquake in recent years – a magnitude 5.0 – occurred in July 2024, following a 4.7 magnitude earthquake in August 2022.

This pattern is expected to continue, but future earthquakes are unlikely to exceed magnitude 5.5, Anh said. He added that more detailed studies are needed to better understand seismic activity in the region.

Earthquakes in Vietnam are mostly minor, usually less than 5.0, and rarely cause damage or injuries. However, scientists are monitoring them closely as part of long-term efforts to assess seismic risks and improve early warning systems. — Vince
