An earthquake was detected early Saturday in southwest Texas
The USGS reported a 3.3 magnitude earthquake, centered 37 miles south of Whites
Your Saturday, here are the top things we're tracking for you today. First, let's take a look at our predictions with Corey Howard. Yes, Peyton, thanks so much. Now we'll basically see, we started off yesterday with warm conditions, but we saw this cold front come through us. This cold front will bring cooler temperatures. Take a look at today's highs. Today we expect to see our temperatures about ten degrees above average. But once that cold front actually starts to settle in, we start to see temperatures drop by about ten degrees. That will be the case here in Albuquerque today. We expect it to hit 71.61 when we arrive tomorrow, get a little action. Then, once we get back into the work week, we start to see our temperatures improve and we should be enjoying the 70s. By the time we get to the middle of the week. Peyton, back to you. Good. Thanks Corey. The most important story this morning. Fight over windfall funding reaches the Supreme Court. The justices issued an emergency order temporarily blocking the full surprise payments, allowing the Trump administration time to appeal, a ruling that would require the benefits to continue. Some states say SNAP recipients have already received full payments for November, but the order could prevent other states from starting payments, further delaying aid. Gov. Lujan Grisham says she's not confident federal funding will reach Mexicans' new wallets, so the state spent $30 million to keep the benefits flowing. But that money is already running out. on monday. That's when lawmakers return to the rotunda. The governor calls a special session to extend the payments. Nearly half a million New Mexicans are part of SNAP. Property tax bills are spread throughout Bernalillo County, and some homeowners are double-checking their numbers. Alia Chavez spoke to the county assessor about exactly what your bills pay and how to protect them. Every year, counties and school districts submit their budgets, and part of what pays for those budgets is your property taxes. If you own a home in Bernalillo County, your property taxes will be capped at a 3% increase per year. Unless you just purchased your home, added square footage, or there was a change in ownership on April 1 of each year, a notice must be sent to you letting you know your home's appraisal. If you don't agree to it or find the numbers, you have 30 days to protest. This doesn't cost you anything. Each year, Bernalillo County evaluates more than 285,000 properties, including homes and businesses, and because it is a comprehensive evaluation, 5 to 10 percent of those properties are likely too low. 5-10% of these properties are probably too high. We always welcome property owners who have an appraisal too high to come and protest the appraisal. Last year, there were an estimated 3,200 protests for all properties in Bernalillo County. This year, about 4,200. Normally, once we did an individual review and made a mistake, we corrected 80% of the protests very quickly. We have reached some agreement with the property owner. So, if you find yourself with a tax bill in November that seems out of reach, you have 60 days from the due date to act. Your only recourse is to file a claim to recover the money in local court, and the county says part of the reason your property taxes rise every year is that in addition to paying taxes on your home, you're also paying for bonds that fund hospitals, schools and roads. So, if you are a property owner, your assessment is 3% plus a gain rate increase by your tax entities. LATA says a bond vote doesn't always increase your property taxes. He says that in a good year, that will sometimes mean your taxes will stay the same. Alia Chavez Coat Action Seven News. You can call the Bernalillo County Treasurer's Office at the number right there on your screen. If you have any questions about how to pay your tax bills, there are monthly payment options available. Former Western New Mexico University President Joseph Shepherd has sued the university and several state officials, claiming they retaliated against him after he raised concerns about misuse of funds. He says his contract was lawfully terminated after he questioned a $1 million allocation tied to a charter school on campus. Shepherd resigned earlier this year after the attorney general accused him of wasteful spending and oversight failures. Shepherd insists there was no fraud or misuse of funds, and that he was unfairly targeted. Now, who's ready for this week's pet? This is Wilbur, a tiny little poodle with the softest eyes and the softest heart. He's shy, but with a little patience and a lot of love, he's sure to thrive. You can meet Wilbur at the East Side Shelter. He has beautiful eyes. And then we got Belinda. Belinda is a 2-year-old sheepdog program graduate. She is now affectionate and cuddly and will climb into your lap for more love. You can meet. It's ready. Well, it's ready to take home. If you want to take Melinda home, you can meet her at the West Side Shelter. She has a cute little nose every week. Donate or I want to, you know, adopt a dog. Yes. That's it.
