Alaska earthquakes: Map shows a series of tremors across the coast

Several earthquakes struck off the southern coast of Alaska on Monday, marking the latest set of seismic events in a region already known as one of the world's most active earthquake zones.

The magnitude of the quakes ranged from 2.6 to 4.5, according to a US Geological Survey (USGS) map.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and no tsunami warning was issued.

Four of the quakes struck off the coast in Cook Inlet and the Gulf of Alaska, while three others struck inland.

Why does it matter?

This set of seismic events occurred over the massive Aleutian subduction zone, one of the planet's strongest earthquake sources and the origin of previous devastating tsunamis.

The recent activity highlights the ongoing seismic threat in Alaska – a focal point for U.S. disaster preparedness due to its frequency and history of very strong earthquakes.

The region remains under close monitoring by geologists and emergency planners, as increased activity has been recorded across the North Pacific Ocean since an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula in July.

What do you know?

Data from the US Geological Survey show that the most recent earthquakes began on Sunday evening and continued until Monday.

The larger quake, with a magnitude of 4.5, struck about 130 miles, or about 213 km, southeast of the Attu Nikolsky station, at a depth of about 6.2 miles, or 100 km.

The other earthquakes over a 24-hour period ranged in magnitude from 2.8 magnitude upwards, and were all centered in a sparsely populated area extending along the Gulf of Alaska.

Alaska has seen increased seismic activity in 2025, with authorities tracking several events along the massive Aleutian Thrust, where the Pacific plate subducts beneath the North American plate.

Historically, this massive thrust has produced many of Alaska's largest earthquakes and at least two tsunamis in the 20th century, as documented by the USGS.

On July 29, a large earthquake occurred near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering increased seismic conditions across the North Pacific Ocean. Seismologists described the event as a major shock in a broader sequence, warning that such events could trigger long-lasting aftershock activity at the regional level.

Alaska is consistently ranked as the most seismically active US state and one of the most active states anywhere on Earth. Its location above overlapping tectonic boundaries, particularly the Aleutian subduction zone, means that earthquake preparedness remains a constant concern. The Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964 — a magnitude 9.2 earthquake — remains the largest ever recorded in U.S. history and serves as a benchmark for modern hazard planning and emergency response in the region, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

What people say

“Alaska is the most seismically active state in the United States and one of the most active regions in the world,” Stephen Sobieszczyk, a USGS public affairs specialist and natural hazards media lead, told Newsweek in an email in September.

“New results indicate that the recurrence interval for large tsunamis generated in the eastern Aleutians ranges from 164 to 257 years, an important finding that will inform updates to both the USGS National Seismic Hazard Map and tsunami source models for the NOAA-led National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program,” the USGS said in a 2019 report.

What happens next

The USGS and Alaska Earthquake Center continue to monitor the area for additional aftershocks and signs of an ongoing seismic sequence.

Officials did not issue any tsunami alerts or evacuation directions.

Scientists warn that aftershocks and increased seismic activity could continue for months in the region, especially after major events such as those that occurred near Alaska and the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia.

Residents and officials are urged to remain vigilant and prepared for further dangerous seismic activity as part of Alaska's ongoing risk environment.
