A 3.6 million magnitude earthquake hits the Vallejo area, following a cluster of previous quakes

A small but noticeable 3.6-magnitude earthquake occurred Thursday at 12:41 p.m., with its epicenter two miles southeast of Vallejo.

According to the USGS, a 3.6-meter earthquake struck south of Vallejo Thursday afternoon, and shaking was felt a mile away in San Francisco, the East Bay and parts of the North Bay.

The quake appears to have occurred along the Southampton Fault, which appears to be a northern extension of the Calaveras Fault — a fault that runs under the East Bay all the way to Hollister, just east of the Hayward Fault.

A swarm of small earthquakes occurred along the Calaveras Fault Sunday morning, the Chronicle reported, the largest of which was 3.8 million magnitude. The fault is believed to be capable of producing earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.7 million or thereabouts.

The map below shows the major and secondary faults under the Bay Area, with the Southampton Fault shown in yellow, labeled 11. It intersects with the Franklin Fault, which leads directly off the Calaveras Fault and under the city of Vallejo.

Connected faults are thought to be capable of rupturing together, potentially causing larger earthquakes. A study conducted nearly a decade ago found that the Rodgers Creek and Hayward faults are interconnected, capable of causing an earthquake along a stretch extending a total distance of 115 miles.
