Situation overview

Nearly two weeks after the November 3, 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan, the true extent of the devastation has become clearer. Updated joint assessments confirm that 26 people were killed, 1,172 others were injured, and 3,027 families were affected in six provinces.

The quake – felt as far away as Kabul, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan – was most powerful in Samangan and Balkh, with the epicenter between Kholm and Mazar-i-Sharif shaking communities while families slept.

Across the affected area, 874 homes have now been confirmed destroyed and 2,153 damaged, leaving thousands exposed to freezing temperatures and relying on temporary shelter or the generosity of neighbours. While major roads remain open, the areas of Firoz Nakhshir, Kholm, Hazrat Sultan, Sholgara and Marmul remain an operational priority due to the extent of losses and structural weaknesses. Assessments from 26 communities reveal severe disruption to daily life: schools and learning spaces damaged, 91 in total; 18 water sources are no longer usable; Hygiene conditions have deteriorated sharply, with most communities lacking soap and effective hand-washing facilities. Psychological pressures are increasing among children and caregivers, and gaps in winter preparation are widening day by day. As temperatures continue to drop across northern Afghanistan, the humanitarian situation is shifting from immediate shock to an urgent race against winter.
