Mount Rainier's seismic activity is normal

Recently, there has been a false report circulating that Mount Rainier is suddenly showing seismic activity – the report is not true. The indicated signal is actually radio interference, most likely caused by ice accumulation on the antenna of one of our seismic stations. This station, STAR, is one of the last remaining legacy analog sites on the mountain and uses low-power radio transmission to send data to the receiving site. This older, low-power system is vulnerable to weather-related interference, and recent inclement weather is certainly the culprit. There is currently no unusual seismic activity on Mount Rainier.

The following two seismic drawings date back to the same recent time period at two stations higher up the mountain: One is the STAR located west of Summit and the other the RCS is to the northeast and is only about 4 km (2.5 mi) away.

Note that there are periods in the STAR seismogram above where the signal looks almost normal but other periods where it is very strong. When a radio receiver loses a signal, like the static you might hear on your car radio when the signal fades, the seismic signal becomes just loud noise.

The seismogram above is the same time period on the RCS station with explanations of examples of typical signals seen on this high station surrounded by glaciers and rocky slopes and exposed to winds. Any larger “ice slides or rockfalls” can be easily seen on a STAR station if it is operating properly.

Any unusual seismic activity (large earthquakes or volcanic tremor) at the volcano will appear at both stations (and many other stations on or near the volcano) and will be detected and reported by us within a short period of time, as happened in July of this year.

Here is another comparison of seismograms (1 minute in this case) for five different stations at the exact same time yesterday, where the STAR station is still having telemetry issues. This shows waveforms recorded by these stations from a small quarry explosion located 32 km (~20 miles) north of Mount Rainier. The first three stations (RCS, RCM and STAR) are located at the top of the mountain while stations PANH and MILD are located on the lower sides. It is clear that STAR does not exhibit ground vibrations but rather random noise.

Unfortunately, inaccurate journalism by non-scientists who do not understand seismology and review by those who do can lead to confusion among the general public and more work for those who need to correct clearly incorrect information.
