Artificial Intelligence Reveals Hidden Earthquake Patterns in Yellowstone | Montana

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — A new study highlights the use of artificial intelligence to detect small earthquakes in Yellowstone that are often missed by traditional methods, according to Yellowstone Caldera Records, a weekly column written by scientists and collaborators at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory.

Recent advances in machine learning have allowed researchers to identify seismic events that are too small to be recorded in standard catalogs, reports David Shelley, a seismologist with the USGS. This approach has revealed important patterns in how seismic swarms are related in space and time.

The study, published in the journal Science Advances, analyzed 15 years of seismic data from 2008 to 2022. It used artificial intelligence to sift through large data sets, revealing more than 86,000 events, more than 10 times the number previously identified. These small earthquakes, typically less than 1.5 magnitude, provide new insights into Yellowstone's seismic activity.

Shelley noted that these results provide a better understanding of the connections between earthquake swarms that may occur at distant intervals but close together. He suggested that the movement of fluids in the Earth's interior might lead to such swarms.

Recent activity in November 2025 included 251 earthquakes, the largest of which was a magnitude 3.2 event near Mammoth Hot Springs. The report indicated that swarms were also recorded near Lake and West Yellowstone in Montana.
