A 7.6-magnitude earthquake shook northern Japan, causing several aftershocks that affected local residents. A tsunami warning was issued in several provinces but was later lifted. The warnings advised residents to prepare for more possible strong earthquakes in the coming days.

A strong earthquake struck off the coast of northern Japan on Monday, prompting a tsunami warning and injuring dozens.

The earthquake reached a magnitude of 7.6 and caused buildings to shake and bridges to shake. As of Tuesday, there were no reports of deaths or serious damage. 34 injuries – most of them mild – were reported in the area affected by the quake, according to CBS News.

On Tuesday morning, the Japanese government lifted the tsunami warning.

“We are continuing to work to understand the damage,” Prime Minister Sanae Takaishi said at a news conference on Tuesday, according to the New York Times.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred off Aomori Prefecture on Japan's main island of Honshu at around 11 p.m. local time.

The original quake was followed by a series of aftershocks on Tuesday, including a magnitude 6.6 one.

After the earthquake, the meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning for Aomori, Iwate and Hokkaido prefectures and a tsunami warning for Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.

Residents were told to evacuate to higher ground, before alerts and advisories were lifted by 6 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the New York Times.

Tsunami waves more than 2.2 feet high were detected at a port in Iwate Prefecture on Honshu Island. Waves of more than 1.3 feet were also recorded at Mutsu Ogawara Port in Aomori Prefecture and Urakawa in Hokkaido.

The epicenter of the quake was 50 miles off the coast and at a depth of about 30 miles, according to CNBC.

In Aomori, the earthquake caused a small water leak at a nuclear fuel processing plant. The leak was contained and Japan's Nuclear Regulatory Authority said there were no safety concerns.

Hundreds of households were without power, but no other violations were reported at nuclear power plants in the area, according to CNBC. The earthquake also caused fires in a few cities.

This earthquake was strong enough to make it impossible to continue standing or moving without crawling, according to CNBC. These types of tremors can cause heavy furniture to collapse and damage wall tiles and window panels.

The authorities advised residents in a wide area from the island of Hokkaido in the far north, up to Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, to be on alert in anticipation of the possibility of a strong earthquake occurring later in the week.
