Government of Japan to accept 1.23 mil. Foreign workers are under two systems

The Japanese government has decided to accept more than 1.23 million foreign workers under two systems – for skilled employees and a new training program.

The government presented its plan to a committee of experts to accept 1,231,900 workers until the end of March 2029.

It says 805,700 people will be accepted in 19 areas under the current system of designated skilled workers. By industry, 199,500 will be in industrial products manufacturing, 133,500 in food and beverage product manufacturing, and 126,900 in nursing care.

The other system, which will be introduced on April 1, 2027, aims to train foreign workers until they reach the specified skilled employee level in three years in principle. A total of 426,200 people will be admitted in 17 streams under this scheme. By industry, 123,500 will be in construction, 119,700 in industrial manufacturing, and 61,400 in food and beverage manufacturing.

Officials say this is the maximum, as they have calculated the number of employees that could be secured in Japan and the expected rise in productivity.

The government plans to discuss the plan and obtain Cabinet approval in January.
