Nearly five million earthquakes have struck in the past ten years » Explorersweb
A map of earthquakes between 2015 and 2025 shows a near-continuous flash of convulsions around the world. The pattern clearly reveals the locations: dense clusters of points coincide with the planet's tectonic plates.
Perhaps most surprising is the sheer number of earthquakes that occur. Over the past 24 hours, 1,518 earthquakes were recorded, according to Volcano Discovery data. In the past 10 years, there have been a staggering 4,884,014. Even so, most of us would say we've never felt it, and only occasional large earthquakes make global headlines.

The reason is that approximately 64 percent of these earthquakes have a magnitude of less than 2.0. It is too weak to notice, but seismographs easily record it. Another 22 percent decrease in strength between 2.0 and 2.9 degrees. Again, these vibrations are often imperceptible, no worse than the vibrations of a passing truck. These small tremors account for most recorded earthquakes.
It may seem as if the number of earthquakes has risen in recent decades. Instead, what has changed is our ability to detect them. Seismic networks have expanded, and modern instruments have become much more sensitive and can record even small earthquakes that could not be recorded previously. In fact, seismic activity has remained relatively stable.
However, this activity is unevenly distributed around the world. For nine of the past 10 years, the United States has recorded more earthquakes than any other country. This is likely due to the extensive seismic network and active plate boundaries in Alaska and the western states.
This year, Japan topped the list with 160,079 recorded earthquakes. The vast majority of these were harmless. Only 5,954 of them exceeded strength 3, and only 149 reached strength 5, the level at which light structural damage begins to occur.
Despite the huge number of earthquakes around the world, devastating earthquakes are still rare. On average, there are about 15 earthquakes of magnitude 7 or higher per year. Of the 50 largest earthquakes since 1900, only one has occurred in the past decade.
On July 30, 2025, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck about 71 kilometers offshore of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, in the Kuril-Kamchatka subduction zone in the North Pacific Ocean.

The earthquake triggered a tsunami and caused the eruption of seven volcanoes in the geologically unstable region. According to the US Geological Survey, at least four people were injured, and 55 homes and several buildings were damaged near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the regional capital of Kamchatka.
In addition, at least 106 buildings were damaged in the neighboring Sakhalin region, and the tsunami also destroyed several port structures. The tsunami also damaged the port in Crescent City, California.
It is the largest earthquake recorded globally since the Tohoku event in Japan in 2011 and is ranked among the 10 largest earthquakes ever observed.
Global data obtained over a decade show that earthquakes are not the rare events we think they are. The majority pass silently under our feet.
