A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck Kutch state, Gujarat, and there were no reports of casualties

A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck Gujarat's Kutch district early Friday morning, sparking panic among residents, although no injuries or property damage were reported, officials said.

The earthquake was recorded at 4:30 am and its epicenter was about 22 km west-northwest (WNW) of Rapar in Kutch district, the Gandhinagar-based Earthquake Research Institute said.

The institute said in its update that the earthquake was followed by two tremors of magnitude 2.5 and 3 in the same area.

A Kutch district disaster management official said no casualties or property damage were reported.

Dr. Gaurav Chauhan, a geologist at the Department of Geology at Koch University, said that the 4.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the Rapar district occurred on the northern Wagadh fault line, and its epicenter was recorded at a depth of five kilometers.

He said: “Due to the shallow depth of the epicenter, the impact of this earthquake was greater. After this earthquake, 17 small and large tremors were recorded until 12 noon at depths ranging between 10 and 20 kilometers.”

A local leader from Wagad said that people were awakened from their sleep by the earthquake, adding that memories of the devastating 2001 earthquake had revived again.

The 2001 Kutch earthquake was the third largest and second most destructive earthquake in India in the last two centuries. A large number of towns and villages in the region were almost completely destroyed. The earthquake killed about 13,800 people and injured 1.67 thousand people.

The Kutch region lies in a “high-risk” seismic zone, and earthquakes of lower intensity occur regularly there, according to experts.
