Another earthquake shakes northwest Louisiana news

Last week, northwest Louisiana again felt the roar of an earthquake, this time in De Soto Parish, northeast of the town of Pleasant Hill in Sabine Parish.

Since about this time last year, a number of small earthquakes — unusual, but increasingly frequent — have struck northwest Louisiana and parts of east Texas on the state border. The earthquake near Pleasant Hill on Saturday was one of at least 10 more powerful earthquakes recorded in northwest Louisiana last December.

The USGS has recorded at least 10 earthquakes in northwest Louisiana, and more at the Texas state line, since December 2024.

According to USGS data, an earthquake occurred at 6:47 a.m. four miles northeast of Pleasant Hill.

The quake was about three miles deep and registered a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale, ranking fifth in northwest Louisiana since this time last year.

Earthquakes in Louisiana are rare, largely because the area is not located on an active geological fault line like parts of California and the Pacific Northwest where tremors are more common and much stronger. Geologists believe that the shallow, weak earthquakes now affecting this part of the country are man-made.

Geologists believe that the earthquakes in Louisiana, as well as in Oklahoma and Texas, are caused by saltwater drainage wells used by the oil and gas industry. The wells pump wastewater from extraction operations into the ground, which geologists say, over time, can soften the ground and cause geological slide.

“It was almost certainly caused by man-made processes,” Thomas Pratt, a research geophysicist with the USGS, told The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate after an earthquake in Caddo Parish in January. “There has been a history of earthquakes caused by oil and gas operations there, so this is likely another one of those earthquakes.”

The US Geological Survey recorded Saturday's quake, but did not report a specific earthquake cause. Only three people reported to the USGS that they felt the quake.

In December 2024, Caddo Parish recorded a number of earthquakes around Mooringsport. The earthquakes occurred in clusters, but diminished after January. At the same time, throughout the remainder of 2025, the USGS recorded a series of other earthquakes in neighboring parishes and at the state line near East Texas cities.

Data for the December 2024 earthquakes originally identified with epicenters near Ansertain, Texas, were later revised to have origin points in Caddo Parish.
