More than 400,000 people are without water in Acapulco after the earthquake

More than 400,000 residents of the Pacific coast port and resort of Acapulco, in Guerrero state, remain without drinking water four days after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck near neighboring San Marcos on Friday morning.

The earthquake damaged two major water systems, leaving only one of the three water intake and pumping systems that supply Acapulco with drinking water in operation: the Papagayo 1 system. The Papagayo 2 line, which supplies water to most of the city, suffered a collapse in part of its pipeline during the earthquake, preventing water from being sent to Acapulco from the Papagayo River.

Antonio Lorenzo Rojas Marcial, director of the Acapulco Municipal Water and Sanitation Commission (CAPAMA), said the organization is working at full speed to restore water to the city of 800,000 people, and most water services are expected to be restored by January 12.

The earthquake also disabled the electrical system, leading to fires in the southern and northern wells of the Lomas de Chapultepec Canal, as well as damage to equipment, including starters and a transformer. Fixing this is expected to take longer as it requires specialized parts.

CAPAMA plans to temporarily save water by creating a bypass or connection at the Puerto Marqués water treatment plant once the Papagayo 2 system is repaired.

Mayor Abelina Lopez told residents that drinking water supplies are already stable in the tourist area and some neighborhoods of the coastal city that receive their water from the Papagayo I system.

“I want to confirm that due to our quick attention to these issues, the drinking water supply to the tourist area was restored on Saturday,” Mayor Lopez said.

CAPAMA is believed to be working in coordination with the National Water Commission (Conagua) to repair the damage, although no state or federal government representative joined Mayor Lopez or CAPAMA directors at a press conference held at the Playa Suites Hotel in the Golden District on Monday to provide an update on the situation.
