Delivering relief supplies to visually impaired disaster survivors: Afghanistan earthquake | News/Report | R Japan

The earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan on August 31, 2025 claimed nearly 2,000 lives, making it the country's deadliest earthquake since 1998. Buildings and infrastructure also suffered extensive damage, with an estimated 0.5 to 1.3 million people severely affected. AAR Japan (Aid and Relief Association, Japan) continues to distribute relief supplies in the affected areas.

The distribution of food and supplies was carried out in cooperation with the Afghanistan Society of the Blind, which provides livelihood support to visually impaired individuals. Based on the needs assessment of these people conducted by the association after the earthquake, 51 families were identified as needing urgent assistance and were selected as beneficiaries.

Local staff at the AAR office in Kabul visited a sample of households from targeted households in Kunar, Nangarhar and Laghman provinces. We conducted interviews about the difficulties they faced in their lives after the earthquake and explained to them the schedule and method for distributing relief supplies. We then distributed two months' worth of food supplies (including flour, cooking oil, and beans), soap packets, and three blankets in public squares in each district. We also provide white canes for visually impaired individuals.

Support is essential for survival

Some of those who received assistance had lost their sight due to explosives used in the conflict. A 25-year-old man from Nangarhar province lost his sight and a leg when he stepped on an explosive device while walking on the road when he was 13 years old. Since then, he has relied on his brother's meager income to survive, but the recent earthquake destroyed his house, making his life even more difficult.

“After the earthquake, my family lost our jobs, food and home. The support provided by other organizations often excludes families with people with disabilities, so we had no choice but to rely on relatives and villagers to survive.” With the arrival of winter and the cold getting worse every day, he still lives in a tent. Regarding AAR support, he said: “The distribution went smoothly, and I am very satisfied with the quality of the supplies. This will help us get through the winter with more peace of mind.” He continued: “However, people with disabilities face difficulties in obtaining support in the areas of food, housing, health care, employment and education, and there is insufficient attention from the government. We need continuous support to survive.”
