Earthquakes shake San Francisco at the beginning of Super Bowl week

A group of earthquakes shook the San Francisco area Monday morning, as the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks began preparing for the Super Bowl. The largest tremors reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS) measured 4.2 and occurred around 7 a.m. The 4.2 magnitude quake was centered about 2 1/2 miles southeast of San Ramon, at a depth of about 6 miles. This is about a 33-mile drive north of Levi’s Stadium, where the big game will be played Sunday, and a 37-mile drive east of downtown San Francisco. USGS data shows the quake sent waves through Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto. The first earthquake in that area was reported at 6:27 a.m., with a magnitude of 3.9. There were no immediate reports of damage in the area. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said Monday’s game schedule includes some practices. Players and coaches are also scheduled to participate in Super Bowl Opening Night events on Monday night. The Patriots arrived in California on Sunday, February 1, following their Super Bowl send-off rally at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Thousands of fans were in attendance at the rally, which included performances by the Dropkick Murphys and Patriots fans. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and several star players, including quarterback Drake May and wide receiver Stefon Diggs, spoke to the crowd shortly before heading to the Super Bowl.
