Residents react after an earthquake was reported near Saratoga Springs

SALT LAKE CITY — The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed that a magnitude 3.5 earthquake struck 3.7 miles north and northwest of Saratoga Springs.

The quake occurred on Thursday at approximately 12:53 p.m. GMT, according to the US Geological Survey. This followed another 4.7-magnitude earthquake just two weeks ago near the Utah-Wyoming border.

Officials and residents react to the earthquake

The quake occurred northwest of Lehi and Saratoga Springs, at a depth of about seven kilometers, which is fairly average, said Dr. Emily Morton, a research scientist at the University of Utah’s seismic stations.

“As far as I can tell, no harm has been reported,” Dr. Morton said. “The quake was felt widely. Just looking at all the reports across the valley, from as far north as Layton and as far south as Payson.”

More than 2,500 people reported feeling shaking and shaking. Jessica, in Saratoga Springs, told KSL she had just gotten into the car when the shaking started.

“My car started shaking from side to side and I thought: Is someone messing with me?” And I looked and there was no one around and I sat there and wondered: Is this an earthquake?

One caller from Bluffdale described it as “a bang, then a jolt.”

Saratoga Springs and Lehi residents seem to feel it the most, though KSL has received text messages about it from all over Utah and Salt Lake Counties.

“My dogs started panicking, and the next thing I knew my house was shaking and I was like, ‘Oh boy,'” said Chris, who called KSL from Saratoga Springs. “I’ve had some earthquakes before here in Utah, including a big 5.7 magnitude earthquake that happened in Salt Lake City a few years ago, and I felt like this was along the same lines.”

While some wondered if this quake had anything to do with the 4.7-magnitude quake that struck two weeks ago, Morton said the two tremors were on different fault lines. Smaller aftershocks are possible, Morton explained, but they don’t expect anything else of that size.

“There’s always a small possibility that this will trigger a larger earthquake on the same fault system, the Wasatch Fault System, but there will likely be a few small aftershocks.”
