Poinsett County leaders and emergency crews are simulating a 7.7 magnitude earthquake scenario

PINEWAY, Arkansas (KAIT) – Imagine a 7.7 magnitude earthquake: bridges gone, communities cut off. Leaders and emergency teams in Poinsett County discussed Monday how they would respond if such a disaster occurred tomorrow.

Poinsett County is located directly in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, putting the area at risk for earthquakes.

“This will help us be prepared to be able to take care of our communities and the people in our communities,” Truman Mayor J. Paul Woods said.

Emergency crews gathered at Pineway on Monday for a tabletop exercise simulating a 7.7 magnitude earthquake.

Truman Mayor J. Paul Woods said the biggest concern is infrastructure.

“We’re never going to be 100 percent prepared for any disaster, but the more we train, the more we train, the more we train, the more we learn, the more prepared we will be if we have something like this,” Woods said.

A major earthquake can turn cities into islands.

If the roads disappeared, there would be no easy way to get to hospitals in Jonesboro or Memphis.

“If they go down, how are we going to get out? How are we going to get across? Let’s say Pineway or Truman, how are we going to get across to Jonesboro or Memphis, or the other way to Newport, or somewhere to the hospital?” Woods said.

In this case, the only way to get help or get people out may be by air.

Organizers are now using everything they’ve learned to create a plan for each city in the county.

“It’s not going to be 100 percent perfect, because there’s no way we can be 100 percent prepared, but at least every city will have what we discussed in hand, and they can look through that and say, ‘Hey, this is what we need to do next,'” Woods said.

Leaders said the work doesn’t stop with Monday’s exercise.

The goal is to make sure every first responder knows their role before the ground starts shaking.
