An earthquake has shaken thousands of British tourists after a volcano warning was issued in two holiday areas.

Tourists in the Spanish duo of Tenerife and Gran Canaria felt the tremors after midday on Thursday.

Its relatively shallow depth—just over six miles—caused the seismic motion to be felt more widely.

A Gran Canaria resident said the earthquake “lasted about ten seconds and was more noticeable than ever, as it moved the entire house.”

“It went from less to more. At first it looked like a door closing, but then the whole house moved.”

“I was lying in bed and I felt the mattress shaking. I stared at it and felt a second vibration. It moved a little, but only the mattress,” Madrid resident Deborah Madrid told El Dia newspaper.

Elba Diaz, a resident of Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, said the earthquake was “very noticeable.”

She said it reminded her of a previous earthquake that occurred in 2021.

“I have already experienced the tremors associated with the Taguaget volcano, and this time, just like before, it made me feel dizzy,” she said.

Among the popular tourist sites that felt the quake were Los Cristianos on Tenerife and Las Palmas on Gran Canaria.

The area has a history of strong earthquakes, including a 1989 5.2 magnitude earthquake.

Just seven years ago, the region was hit by a 4.4-magnitude earthquake.

Volcanologist Ruben Lopez was quick to say that the quake was not related to recent seismic activity from Mount Teide.

Low amplitude seismic events are regularly recorded on Tenerife, due to the movement of hydrothermal fluids within the volcanic system.

More than 6,000 deep earthquakes were recorded over 21 days this month, marking one of the most active periods of volcanic activity in recent years.

However, experts said that despite the increased activity, the deep nature of the tremors means the risk of eruption is low.

Teide’s last eruption was in 850 AD, and created a lot of “black lava” covering the volcano.

A study conducted in 2009 said that it would erupt violently in the future, on a scale similar to Mount Vesuvius and Etna.
