An earthquake strikes near the American coast

A small earthquake struck a few hundred miles west of Tampa, Florida, and south of New Orleans, Louisiana, Sunday evening, an area that doesn’t see such reports often.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the 3.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in America’s Gulf just after 10:20 PM local time on Sunday evening, registering a depth of 10 kilometers. No damage or injuries were reported, and only one person claimed to have felt the quake, according to the USGS “Felt It” report.

Newsweek has reached out to the USGS via email for comment.

The earthquake occurred offshore the Gulf, placing it close to coastal communities but not directly affecting them. Because of its marine location, shaking is likely to be limited to the areas closest to the epicenter. Earthquakes of this magnitude can produce vibrations that can cause some of the items suspended inside to sway. People outside may also feel an earthquake of this size.

The epicenter was located about 270 miles south of Louisiana and 377 miles west of Tampa, Florida. According to USGS reports, no other earthquakes were recorded in the same area during the past three weeks. No tsunami alerts were issued.

Although it is unlikely that the earthquake shook neighboring Gulf states, it still caught the attention of some social media accounts.

In 2006, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred…the largest ever in the Gulf,” Florida meteorologist Matt Devitt posted on X.

“The Gulf had an earthquake last night. Yes that’s right. It happened around 10:22pm Sunday 03/29 south of New Orleans and west of Tampa,” Mike’s Weather Page posted on Is your stomach flopping?”

Although Gulf earthquakes are not as common as quakes off the West Coast, the latest quake follows a series of similar events that have struck northwest Louisiana, WAFB reported, the largest of which was a 4.9-magnitude earthquake that occurred on March 5. The report said the quake was widely felt, which was the second largest in the state’s history.

The USGS has reported several other earthquakes around the world in the time since the Gulf quake occurred Sunday night. In the United States, several earthquakes were reported along the California coast, with a few also reported in West Texas.
