Indonesia earthquake destroys buildings and causes tsunami waves

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake occurred in the northern Molucca Sea off the Indonesian island of Ternate on Thursday, damaging some buildings and causing a tsunami, authorities and witnesses said.

The US Geological Survey reported aftershocks of magnitude 5, and the Indonesian meteorological agency BMKG reported tsunami waves in western Halmahera with a height of 0.3 meters and Bitung with a height of 0.2 metres.

The Indonesian Metro TV channel reported that a person was killed as a result of falling rubble in the Manado area, and a video clip showed destroyed buildings.

A Manado resident told Reuters that people fled their homes in panic. There was no apparent damage in her neighborhood, but items fell from shelves and the electricity went out.

Indonesia is located on the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is a very seismically active region, where different plates meet on the Earth’s crust and cause a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.

Regional governments in some cities, such as Ternate and Tidore, the historic Spice Islands, have been urged to prepare citizens for evacuation.

The US tsunami warning authorities said that dangerous tsunami waves are likely to occur along the coasts of Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia within a thousand kilometers of the earthquake epicenter.

The epicenter of the earthquake was approximately 580 kilometers south of the coast of the Philippines and 1,000 kilometers from the Malaysian state of Sabah.

The Philippine seismological agency, Phivolcs, said there was no “threat of a devastating tsunami” for the country based on the latest data.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department said in a Facebook post that there is no tsunami threat in Malaysia at the moment and it is monitoring developments.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that waves ranging in height from 0.3 meters to one meter above tide level could hit some coastal areas in Indonesia.

It also warned of the risk of waves less than 0.3 meters high above tidal levels for the coasts of Guam, Japan, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Taiwan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that Japan may witness waves up to 0.2 meters high, but no damage is expected, and warned of the possibility of a tsunami in the Pacific Ocean.
