Kumamoto remembers the victims of the 2016 earthquakes in a joint ceremony with municipalities

Thursday marks ten years since a second massive earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan.

On Thursday, the governorate and its 45 municipalities held a joint memorial ceremony for the first time since the two earthquakes.

The second earthquake, with a magnitude of 7 on the Japanese seismic scale from 0 to 7, occurred on April 16, 2016. The first tremor on April 14 recorded the same intensity.

This was the first time in Japan’s recorded history that two earthquakes of magnitude 7 occurred in succession in the same area.

The earthquakes killed 278 people in Kumamoto and neighboring Oita Prefecture, including those who died of disaster-related causes. More than 198,000 buildings were destroyed or damaged in Kumamoto alone.

About 260 people participated in the joint memorial service, including bereaved families and representatives of the province and municipalities.

All participants observed a minute of silence to mourn the victims.

Kumamoto Governor Kimura Takashi said they should never forget the precious lives lost and the many sacrifices made. He pledged to pass on earthquake memories to the next generation, and never let them fade, so that they can better prepare for disasters.

Four high school students who were primary school students at the time of the earthquakes said they were touched by the kindness of people who stood by them at evacuation centres.

They went on to say that despite living in fear, they gradually regained peace of mind and were able to smile again. They expressed their intention to pass on the memories and lessons learned, and in the future they aim to support others, as they themselves received support.

Then the participants laid flowers and prayed.
