Trump causes political earthquake in Kentucky, supports Barr and Alvarado in US Senate and House races • Kentucky Lantern

The night before the Kentucky Derby, Republican President Donald Trump placed his bets on two Republicans facing crowded primaries — U.S. Rep. Andy Barr for U.S. Senate and Ralph Alvarado for a U.S. House seat in central Kentucky.

Trump said he supports U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, the “certain political winner” in the race for Kentucky’s open U.S. Senate seat on Friday evening, nearly two weeks before the primary.

The president gave Barr his “full and complete endorsement” in a post on the Truth Social website.

Trump said: “Andy is the only candidate who will easily defeat the Democrat in what will be one of the most important elections in American history.” “He will help ensure victory over these radical leftists, who are destroying the country, and their thugs. Andy Barr has my full and total endorsement to be the next United States Senator from Kentucky – he will never let you down!”

Barr thanked the president in a statement.

“Just as the president said at his rally in Northern Kentucky in March, I’ve been with him all the way and I always will be,” he said, referring to the event Trump organized in Hebron in March. He added, “As the next Senator, I will stand with President Trump 100% to achieve Kentucky’s goals and to keep Making America Great Again.”

Barr faces former Attorney General Daniel Cameron and Lexington businessman Nate Morris in a heated Republican primary race for the seat, currently held by longtime U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell. The senator said early last year that he would not seek re-election.

Before endorsing Barr, Trump said on Truth Social that he would make Morris an ambassador, and said he would “announce Nate’s new role soon.”

Following news of the endorsement, Morris withdrew from the race. He posted on X that he was endorsing Barr — after the two traded blows during the campaign.

“I am so proud to join President Trump in endorsing @BarrForSenate,” Morris said. “As President Trump said, Andy knows what it takes to get things done and achieve big goals on the America First agenda.”

While in the race, Morris had the support of Trump’s allies. Tech billionaire Elon Musk donated $10 million to a pro-Morris political action committee earlier this year. Additionally, Morris announced his candidacy on Donald Trump Jr.’s “Triggered” show last year.

Barr thanked Morris in a statement, calling him “an accomplished business leader and patriot who loves our commonwealth and country,” and said he looked forward to “continuing to work with him to do everything we can to make Kentucky and America greater.”

Political action committees supporting Barr and Morris attacked the other candidate for months before endorsing Trump on the airwaves in Kentucky. The candidates haven’t been shy about criticizing their public appearances either. At a debate in Louisville in March, Barr and Morris clashed several times, talking over each other and refuting each other’s attacks. At the Fancy Farm Picnic last summer, an event known for fiery political speeches, Barr described Morris’ campaign as a “dumpster fire,” while Morris said Barr and Cameron were “McConnell’s boys,” a reference to their ties to one of the state’s top senators.

Trump’s endorsement comes after The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that Trump was considering endorsing Barr.

The GOP’s top three candidates have spent most of their campaign so far trying to associate themselves with the president and his policies, hoping that Republican voters in Kentucky will rally behind them and ultimately elect them in the May 19 primary.

“Congratulations to Mitch McConnell on getting his man,” Brandon Moody, a political adviser to Cameron, said in a statement in response to Trump’s endorsement. Cameron told the Lexington Herald-Leader earlier this year that the “worst secret in town” was that McConnell’s team was supporting Barr.

In the 2023 governor’s race, Cameron won the Republican nomination with Trump’s endorsement. However, he lost to Democratic Governor Andy Beshear that fall. Cameron has a special relationship with McConnell, having once served as his general counsel.

Trump also endorsed a candidate for Bar’s congressional seat in the state’s central 6th District — Alvarado, the former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Health and a former state senator from Kentucky. Alvarado is currently facing a Republican primary there against state Rep. Ryan Dotson and retired pharmaceutical executive Greg Plosinski.

Calling Alvarado a “true friend of MAGA,” Trump said on Truth Social that Alvarado “has been with us since the beginning!”
