A 4.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded Monday night

TONOPAH, Nev. (FOX5) – A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck central Nevada Monday night, and shaking was felt in nearby Tonopah.

The quake was reported around 7:39 p.m., about 48 miles from Tonopah, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). About 10 minutes later, a 3.4 magnitude aftershock was reported approximately 47 miles from Tonopah.

While the epicenter was in a remote desert area, the quake was also felt in nearby communities including Ely, Warm Springs and Eureka, according to ShakeMap.

The shaking comes amid increased seismic activity in the state, including a 5.2 magnitude earthquake about 12 miles from Silver Springs on May 1 and a 3.7 magnitude earthquake about 64 miles from Las Vegas overnight the day before.

Tonopah is located about 230 miles south of Reno and about 211 miles north of Las Vegas, although no activity has been reported in either area.
