A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hits the island of Hawaii, shaking the state; No tsunami was generated

Honaunau (HawaiiNewsNow) – A tsunami is not expected following a 6.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred about seven miles east-southeast of Honaunau in the South Kona region of Hawaii Island.

According to the USGS, the quake occurred at 9:46 p.m., and was centered about 3.7 miles east-southeast of the Honaunau-Napopu region along the western side of Mauna Loa, at a depth of 14 miles.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the earthquake did not cause a tsunami.

A second earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale occurred six minutes later, to the northwest of the first, about 13 miles below the surface.

According to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the earthquakes were not directly related to volcanic activity.

“The depth of the earthquake, its location and the recorded seismic waves indicate that it was caused by pressure generated by the bending of the oceanic plate due to the weight of the Hawaiian island chain,” HVO said in a statement.

The USGS also said there were several other aftershocks, but less than magnitude 3. More aftershocks are likely in the coming days but are unlikely to be large enough to be felt or cause damage.

This USGS map shows where the quake was felt, with some reporting a very strong shaking near the epicenter.

HVO also said that more than 2,500 residents and visitors had submitted “substantiated” reports to the USGS website for the event by 11pm on Friday. That number had grown to more than 5,800 responses by 2 a.m. Saturday.

Lacey Denise, a former reporter for Hawaii News Now, described the violent shaking and damage to her home in Honaunau on the island of Hawaii “like something out of a movie.”

“It was very terrifying,” Deniz said. “It was very violent.” “Our house was literally shaking from side to side, and I think the scary part was the duration as well. It went on for a very long time.”

Denise said the shaking was so strong that her mother had to protect her young son when the glass came out of the cabinets and fell to the floor.

“Thank God my mom was here,” she said. “My son was crawling on the floor, so my mom had to stand over my son and protect him because all the glass was coming out of the cabinets and falling on the floor. So she was hitting all of our dishes and trying to protect my son.”

Denise said she and her family fled home, and except for some wounds, no one was seriously hurt. But while walking through the house, the damage was extensive.

“It’s all on the floor. The glass is broken, all our cabinets are open, our toilet is cracked, our dresser, the shelves, the drawers, it’s on its side and it just flipped over,” she said.

Hawaii News Now received reports of a strong tremor felt across the state as far away as Oumau and Hanalei on the island of Kauai.

Residents also reported strong shaking on Oahu at Kailua, Ewa Beach and Kapolei, and HNN received calls from Makawao and Wailuku on Maui.

Over the past 50 years, 35 other earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater have occurred within 60 miles of Friday night’s event, the USGS says.

There have also been larger earthquakes, including the 7.7 magnitude Kalapana earthquake in November 1975. The earthquake and resulting tsunami killed two people, injured 28, and caused $4.1 million in property damage.

More recently, the 6.7 magnitude earthquake beneath Kiholo Bay off the northwest coast of Hawaii Island in October 2006 was felt statewide. It caused minor injuries, damaged roads and at least 1,000 buildings, and caused landslides. Geologists said this was also a deep earthquake in the lithosphere caused by the weight of the islands.
