Big Island families face a water crisis about two weeks after the earthquake

SOUTH KONA, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) – Families are still without water nearly two weeks after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Big Island.

When a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck South Kona on Hawaii Island nearly two weeks ago, many were cut off from fresh water completely when water collection systems suffered catastrophic bursts.

“One of the biggest disasters I’ve seen was 25 to 30,000 gallons that were immediately dumped and literally created an Amazon river,” said Corey Yeaton, owner of Pacific Blue Catchment Company.

This is what happened in one house where the driveway sank and cracked. This tank system could cost upwards of $40,000 to replace, Yeaton said.

A rusty tank was also subjected to an explosion. The fragile lining could not withstand the shear force of the quake, forcing 20,000 gallons of water underground.

He’s been seeing up to 15 homes a day, with more waiting for help.

“I think we’ve had over 150 calls. We have about 80 people on our waitlist waiting to have lines or tanks replaced,” Yeaton said.

Hawaii County Sheriff Kimo Alameda and Hawaii County Civil Defense said 463 damage reports have been filed so far. Of the 101 homes visited, 18 were destroyed and 60 suffered serious damage.

“This 6.0 magnitude earthquake has affected our people, especially on the south side,” Alameda said.

“We have already provided more than 4,000 gallons of potable water, a water tanker to Miloli because that is where the water was requested the most, and we also opened some taps for people to go to additional taps. We extended the hours and that’s just for potable water,” Alameda said.

The work may take months. Yeaton suggests investing in newer, stronger materials, and said he’s amazed by the rebuilding spirit people have together after a disaster.

Alameda said he’s also concerned about farmers who need water, so the county is working to make sure they apply for federal assistance. He also said the county may not reach the threshold for federal disaster assistance, so it is working with the state on the potential need for state disaster relief funds.
