An earthquake shakes the city of Chandigarh, northern region

Strong earthquakes rocked Chandigarh and the Tricity district on Friday night, triggering widespread panic as residents – especially those living in high-rise apartments and multi-storey housing societies – abandoned their homes and flocked to the streets and open plots.

The earthquake was recorded at approximately 9:46 pm EST, and its magnitude reached 5.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was near the Afghan-Tajik border in the Hindu Kush region, at 71.01 degrees east and 36.52 degrees north, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

NCS set the focal depth at 75 km. Seismologists noted that the great depth of the epicenter was responsible for tremors spreading widely across the region—strong enough to be felt in multiple states but without causing significant surface destruction at the epicenter.

The tremors were felt across Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Noida, Ludhiana, Poonch, Srinagar, Udhampur and Dehradun, among other places. Residents of high-rise towers in Chandigarh sectors and adjoining areas of Mohali reported palpable shaking that lasted for several seconds, with light bulbs swaying and household objects shaking. People ran from buildings in panic.

As of filing this report, no casualties or structural damage have been reported in Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula. Emergency services have been placed on alert and authorities are closely monitoring the situation. He advised people to remain calm, avoid elevators, and move to open spaces in the event of subsequent earthquakes.
