Intelligence agencies have warned that Chinese agents are posing as HR recruiters and consultants to trick Western governments and militaries into revealing state secrets. The Five Eyes alliance, made up of the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, says Chinese spies advertise fake analyst jobs on platforms such as LinkedIn, Indeed and Upwork, then try to convince applicants to share classified or privileged information during interviews or trial reports. A spokesman for the Chinese embassy in the UK condemned the warning, calling the allegations “purely false” and “malicious slander”. China’s supporters have pointed out that the American NSA and the British intelligence service GCHQ also collect data online, as do social media and tech giants.
