An earthquake strikes the southern Philippines, prompting a tsunami warning to be issued

Tsunami warnings and alerts have been issued in the Pacific Ocean after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Monday, June 8, according to agencies in the United States and the Philippines.

Several large aftershocks were also reported in the area, including three tremors larger than magnitude 6.0. There were no immediate reports of serious damage in either country.

A host of tsunami warnings and advisories have been issued across the wider region, according to government officials in the United States and the Philippines. Tsunami warnings were issued for the Philippines and Indonesia, and the US Tsunami Warning Center advised that tsunami waves could reach about 3 to 9 feet in size.

A tsunami warning was in effect across several coastal provinces in Mindanao, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. posted on X. Marcos urged residents of affected areas to “please heed the tsunami warning” and move to higher areas.

After initially issuing a potential tsunami threat to the North American Pacific coast, the warning center confirmed that there was no danger to the coasts of the United States or Canada in the wake of the massive earthquake.

A tsunami warning was issued for Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, but was later cancelled, although the US National Weather Service warned of the possibility of strong rip currents. The Meteorological Service said the islands of Paulau, Yap and Micronesia were advised to listen to the latest information from officials.

Damage reports

Benji Ancheta, police chief of the town of Alabil in Sarangani, Philippines, said that the police building suffered some cracks immediately after the earthquake, which occurred during the flag-raising ceremony, Reuters reported.

Ancheta said there were no immediate reports of casualties, but some people fainted after the strong earthquake. “This is the strongest earthquake we have ever seen,” Ancheta told Reuters by phone.

Witnesses in the city of Manado in northern Indonesia said that the earthquake was very strong.

The Philippine Phivolcs Agency said that the magnitude of the earthquake reached 7.0 and warned of damage and tsunami waves over one square that could last for several hours.

Marcos also said he ordered the suspension of all classes at all levels in the affected areas until further notice.

Initial reports issued by the German Research Center for Geosciences linked the earthquake to a magnitude of 8.2 and a depth of 6.2 miles.

Subsequent information released by the US Geological Survey, after revision, estimated the magnitude of the quake at 7.8, at a depth of about 34 miles. The initial quake was centered about 15 miles west-southwest of Burias in the Philippines, the USGS said.

The Philippines and Indonesia lie along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped seismically active zone around the Pacific Ocean. It extends “from the southern tip of South America, along the west coast of North America, through the Bering Strait, all the way to Japan and into New Zealand,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The extent of earthquake damage

The extent of damage from the earthquake in terms of magnitude, according to Michigan Technological University:
