A 6.7-magnitude earthquake strikes part of Indonesia, causing damage and injuries
PALU – An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck part of the island of Sulawesi in central Indonesia on Tuesday, injuring at least eight people, causing scattered damage and worrying residents of a city that was destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami eight years ago.
The strong tremors prompted people to flee into open areas in and around Palu, a city with a population of about 400,000 and the capital of Central Sulawesi province. Several hospitals evacuated patients, some on intravenous drips, outdoors as a precaution.
Three areas close to the epicenter – with a combined population of 1.2 million – have not yet been assessed. At least eight people were reported injured in Sigi and taken to a nearby hospital, including two with serious injuries, according to the National Search and Rescue Agency.
Pictures from the area showed severely damaged structures, partially collapsed roofs, shattered walls and debris scattered in the streets. The National Disaster Management Agency said information on damage, potential casualties and displaced people is still being collected.
“We have evacuated all guests from the hotel, including many guests who stayed in their rooms,” said Efendi Natale, general manager of a four-star hotel in Palu.
“They all panicked, which is a normal reaction during an earthquake, but everyone is safe,” Natalie said, adding that the hotel suffered only minor damage.
The initial quake was centered 43 kilometers (27 miles) east-southeast of Palu, and the USGS said it was at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles). This was followed by several aftershocks, the strongest of which was a magnitude of 5.2.
People also stayed away from coastal areas as a precaution in case of a tsunami caused by the earthquake. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said there was no risk of a tsunami, but warned that aftershocks could continue.
“The earthquake was very strong,” said Mukhtar Ahmed, a resident of Palu. “We are still in shock from the previous earthquake, so we chose to stay outside because we fear aftershocks will continue.”
Indonesia experiences many seismic faults, and earthquakes and volcanic activity are common.
Many Sulawesi residents are concerned about the 7.5-magnitude earthquake that devastated Palu in 2018, triggering a 3-meter (10-foot) tsunami and a phenomenon called liquefaction where soil collapses in on itself. More than 4,000 people were killed, including many who were buried when entire neighborhoods were swallowed up by the falling ground.
In January 2021, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake near the city of Mamuju on the island of Sulawesi killed at least 100 people, and thousands slept outdoors for days in fear of aftershocks.
