The Salvation Army responds after deadly earthquake in Indonesia

The Salvation Army is assessing urgent needs and preparing emergency support after a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, affecting more than 6,400 people.

The earthquake occurred at 11.27 a.m. local time on Tuesday, June 16, with its epicenter located about 42 kilometers southeast of Palu and at a depth of 10 kilometers. A strong tremor was widely felt across Palu and its surrounding areas, prompting residents to leave buildings and seek safety outdoors.

According to the latest data from Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Authority, three people had died as of Thursday, June 18, 17 others were seriously injured and 91 suffered minor injuries. A total of 2,109 families (6,412 people) were affected by the disaster.

Extensive damage

The earthquake caused severe damage to homes and community infrastructure. At least 1,652 homes were affected, including 69 homes with major damage, 111 homes with moderate damage and 1,472 homes with minor damage. Public and social facilities were also affected, including 42 places of worship, eight office buildings, 13 school buildings, two traditional houses, and eight clean water systems.

Many families continue to remain outside or in temporary shelters made of tarpaulins, because their homes are no longer safe or habitable. The ongoing aftershocks have increased fear and uncertainty, with many residents understandably hesitant to return to their homes.

Major Albert Selinwa, Commander of the Salvation Army Division in Palolo, reported that several Salvation Army churches and community buildings sustained damage, including centers in Sintuo 3, Banbris, Eben Hezer, Kamarora, Bitimbi, Kadidiya, Limban Tongoa, Rawa and Karunya.

Preparations for emergency response

As aftershocks continue, the safety of officers, church members and local communities remains a major concern. Salvation Army teams in Palolo have begun collecting reports from affected areas to support emergency response preparations.

Healthcare workers at The Salvation Army’s Woodward Hospital in Palo are also supporting those affected, while officers and staff from various departments are working together as part of the broader response.

The Governor of Central Sulawesi visited earthquake-affected villages in Nokilalaki and Palolo Districts, Sigi District. Rapid assessments and community identification have confirmed urgent needs in affected areas.

Initial response

Immediate priorities include access to clean and safe drinking water, emergency tents and temporary shelter, medical and health services, blankets and basic relief items. There is also an urgent need for child nutrition and hygiene support, including age-appropriate food, safe infant feeding support where appropriate, and basic hygiene supplies.

The Salvation Army Indonesia is working to ensure support reaches affected communities as soon as possible.

“The recovery process calls for solidarity and collective support,” said Captain Jeffrey Ampitan, an Indonesian Salvation Army officer currently working at Salvation Army International Headquarters as Project and Finance Director for International Emergency Services. Through our continued prayers and tangible assistance, we can strengthen affected communities and ensure they receive the protection, care and essential services they urgently need during this difficult time.

Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available, but we continue to keep those affected in our prayers.
