Boca Raton businesses strive to keep Venezuela earthquake relief efforts alive

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Local businesses in Boca Raton are continuing their efforts to support families affected by the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela last week, leaving thousands dead and more missing.

And since the recovery has only just begun, local business owners say it’s important for the community not to forget or move on.

‘Keep Donating’: Boca Raton businesses strive to keep Venezuela earthquake relief efforts alive

From more than a thousand miles away, a West Boca supermarket and a Venezuelan restaurant are collecting supplies and cash donations to send directly to affected families.

Frankie George, owner of GalaFresh West Boca Raton supermarket, said he moved quickly after hearing about the quakes and is now accepting supplies and financial donations.

“Aside from a lot of our clients who are from Venezuela, and all of our friends from Venezuela, being Latino, we really feel like this is something that hits really close to home,” Jorge said.

Dozens of volunteers sorted non-perishable foods, baby supplies, clothing and more, said Pamela Rodriguez, owner of Dr. Chicha Store.

“This whole situation is incredibly painful. It really is,” Rodriguez said.

These donations will be transported to the Global Empowerment Mission in Doral and then shipped to families in Venezuela.

Rodriguez said the community response has been overwhelming.

“We had tremendous support from the community. This place was absolutely packed,” Rodriguez said.

She said one of the volunteers was an earthquake survivor.

“She said, ‘I’m a survivor.’ I spent four days trapped under rubble before I was rescued,” Rodriguez said.

As the road to recovery continues, Rodriguez said it’s important that the community doesn’t forget or move too quickly. “The most important thing is to keep donating,” Rodriguez said.

George echoed this sentiment. “It’s brutal. Today it’s Venezuela, tomorrow it could be somewhere else and we just want to make sure we’re there. That we’re there to help no matter where we are,” Jorge said. “Just pay it forward,” Jorge said.
