The death toll from the Venezuela earthquake exceeds 4,300 as the scale of recovery efforts increases Venezuela

The Venezuelan government announced on Saturday that the death toll from the two devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela had exceeded 4,300 people.

At least 4,333 people were killed and 16,740 injured in successive earthquakes on June 24, which destroyed entire regions in the coastal state of La Guaira, Venezuelan Parliament Speaker Jorge Rodriguez wrote on Telegram. Thousands of other people are listed as missing.

On Friday, a 3.0-magnitude earthquake in central Caracas caused momentary panic and led to the evacuation of buildings.

The scale of the recovery efforts facing Venezuela, where government services have been severely degraded by a prolonged economic crisis, is enormous.

The United Nations on Wednesday issued an urgent appeal for nearly $300 million for earthquake relief operations to help 1.3 million people in desperate need of aid in the South American country where non-governmental organizations were until recently the target of government repression. Kitchens, mobile clinics and field hospitals are now dotting public spaces in the northern state of La Guaira, where most of the destruction occurred.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction estimated the direct physical damage to housing and infrastructure at about $37 billion.

Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, called for the release of frozen assets held abroad to be used for recovery. She said on Wednesday that she had asked King Charles to release about 30 tons of Venezuelan gold frozen under British sanctions.

Delcy Rodriguez defended her country’s emergency response to the two earthquakes, vowing that the country would not slide into social unrest.

Many Venezuelans have expressed anger at what they see as the US-backed government’s inadequate response to the disaster before international teams arrived.
