The death toll from the Venezuela earthquake has risen to 4,490 people

CARACAS, Venezuela — The official death toll from two devastating earthquakes in Venezuela rose to nearly 4,500 on Sunday, with the government reporting that more than 19,500 people are now living in camps due to the devastation.

The latest toll published by the government on its official Telegram account listed 4,490 dead – about 150 people higher than the previous day – and 16,740 wounded.

It did not specify how many people were still missing.

On June 24, earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck Caracas and the coastal state of La Guaira, flattening entire high-rise residential buildings in layers of rubble.

Camps for homeless families have appeared in playgrounds, public squares and on sidewalks in La Guaira as well as in nearby Caracas.

The government update on Sunday said 19,583 people were living in camps.

National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodriguez, brother of interim leader Delcy Rodriguez, said on Saturday that the government would begin providing some apartments to families in the coming days that were under construction before the quake.

But he added that significant resources would be needed to build more, provide rental assistance and provide loans for property purchases.

Rodriguez said the government has allocated more than 40 plots of land in La Guaira, with a total area of ​​about 584,000 square metres, for the construction of new homes.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Ivan Gil reported on Sunday on his Telegram account that an aid shipment had arrived from Russia.
