How did Israel win the Public Diplomacy World Cup in Venezuela?
The world’s first Jew, Abraham, was the first victim of anti-Semitism, when Nimrod, who declared himself king of Babylon, threw him into a fiery furnace.
I attended a wonderful presentation by Stern College Bible lecturer Dr. Nechama Price at Herzog College’s impressive Bible study conference in Alon Shvut this week. Price explained that Nimrod was Abraham’s enemy, and the conflict of values between them continued for centuries in the Book of Genesis.
While Abraham aimed to spread the word of God and build his reputation, Nimrod sought to build the Tower of Babel to rebel against God Almighty and make a name for himself. God intervened and dispersed the builders, who no longer spoke the same language, and Abraham later defeated Nimrod in a world war.
Sadly, not much has changed since Abraham’s birth in 1948 according to the Jewish calendar. The Jewish state born in 1948 according to the civil calendar continues to spread Abraham’s values of justice and truth, while anti-Semites spread their lies, corruption and violence, which the Torah refers to in one word: “Hamas.”
In this clash of values, Israel did not have the best week. Two potential presidential candidates came here on campaign stops to criticize the Jewish state and build their street credibility among anti-Israel Democrats, receiving plenty of headlines that made Israel look terrible in America.

Jerusalem Post editor-in-chief Zvika Klein did a great job standing up to them, exposing inconsistencies in Rep. Ro Khanna’s accounts to the media and exposing Rahm Emanuel’s hypocritical views in his interview with the former Chicago mayor.
Emanuel was particularly disappointing to me personally, because his father, Dr. Benjamin Emanuel, distributed Zionist propaganda in the Irgun, saved lives as a medic in the Israeli War of Independence, and was my pediatrician in Chicago. Dr. Emanuel, who passed away seven years ago, attended some of my lectures, and clearly would not have agreed with what his son says today about Israel.
The problem of public relations in Israel
The anti-Israel organizations that brought Khanna and the CNN crew to the West Bank and the Jews they met there in various incidents did not help improve Israel’s image, to put it mildly.
Some of the bills passed in the Knesset this week won’t make Israel look particularly enlightened abroad.
But it is clear that all is not bleak in this clash of values. Foreign Ministry Director-General Eden Bar-Tal painted a surprisingly rosy picture of Israeli public diplomacy at a Knesset State Control Committee meeting on Sunday.
Bar Tal highlighted the allocation of NIS 1.2 billion for public diplomacy in the current state budget, which was allocated to the Foreign Ministry – and not as a one-time allocation like the previous year. He said his ministry is constantly checking and adapting messages that suit different target audiences.
He said that Israel had successfully fought false claims of famine in Gaza, and that it was regaining support in the United States that had been declining among Republicans in part because of Tucker Carlson.
One of Bar-Tal’s messages that resonated was also one of the lessons of the World Cup: We need to focus on the whole world, not just the United States. He spoke about successful outreach in India and Central and Eastern Europe.
One of my proudest accomplishments during my time as CEO of media watchdog HonestReporting was creating an Instagram account in Spanish, following a speaking tour in Panama where I was told about the urgency.
Foreign Minister Gideon Saar declared that 2026 is the Year of Latin America. To this end, Bar-Tal said that Israel sent experts and equipment to Bolivia and ophthalmologists who restored the sight of hundreds of people in Honduras.
He praised Israel for its response to the earthquake
Despite the lack of official diplomatic relations between Israel and Venezuela, Interim President Delcy Rodriguez praised the Israeli delegation that saved lives in Venezuela following the devastating earthquake that struck on June 24, and asked Sa’ar to extend the humanitarian mission. It avoided outrageous calls to reject Israeli aid that came from anti-Semitic organizations.
Bar-Tal said that the delegation received great media coverage everywhere in Latin America. Skeptical, I asked his office for proof, and they sent me several examples, including one that got 1.2 million views and others that got 230k, 144k, and 110k.
A report by Colombian channel NTN24 described the delegation as one of the most trained and developed teams in the world. The channel’s broadcasters praised the Israeli engineers, and pointed out that Israel used drones equipped with artificial intelligence.
One broadcaster noted that the war in Gaza gave Israel experience and technology in finding hostages in tunnels that were used to help find people under rubble in Venezuela. Another broadcaster pointed out that the previous regime in Venezuela used very strong language in condemning Israel, but the delegation came regardless.
Israel’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Yoed Magen, one of the heads of the delegation, explained to the channel that the lack of diplomatic relations with Venezuela makes it difficult, but Israel still feels obligated to contribute its knowledge and technology.
“Since Israel is a country that always contributes to humanitarian issues, we cannot miss it,” Magen said. “Wherever there is a disaster, wherever there is a humanitarian crisis, Israel will be there.”
These are exactly the values of Abraham that Israel wants the world to see.
The writer served as chief political correspondent and analyst for The Jerusalem Post and as executive director of HonestReporting, and has lectured about Israel in all 50 US states.
