Shock, Another Earthquake: World Vision urges protection of mental health for Venezuelan children

Caracas, Venezuela (21 July 2026) — One month after earthquakes devastated north-central Venezuela on 24 June, World Vision warns that, beyond the obvious damage to infrastructure, an “inner earthquake” is beginning to unfold: protection and mental health risks that are exacerbating the emergency for thousands of children and adolescents.

The earthquake shook children who were already suffering huge losses. Nearly 7.9 million people have migrated, and an estimated 1 million children have been left in the care of relatives or neighbors because their parents have migrated. The earthquake also damaged more than 400 schools in an education system already suffering from years of deterioration. Before the disaster, 22% of Venezuelan migrant children were not enrolled in formal education, according to R4V.

Scientific evidence suggests that childhood trauma and negative experiences multiply health risks, and that unprocessed trauma is stored in the body and nervous system. Those who have had four or more negative experiences in childhood are twelve times more likely to think about suicide and face an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood, according to studies by Feletti and Anda (1998).

“Because of this increased risk to mental and physical health, World Vision prioritizes child-friendly spaces during emergencies,” said Maribel Prada, World Vision’s Venezuela director. “It’s an emotional lifeline.” “We have been working for more than a decade with the Parenting with Raqqa approach in the region to protect the mental health of children and their families, as a way to healthily address the multiple losses that disasters bring.”

In these settings, set up in shelters and distribution points where World Vision provides food, water and hygiene supplies, our teams provide psychosocial support, art and play to help children regulate their emotions. Prada said that in the first three weeks of the response, the organization reached 36,720 people, a third of whom were children.

As the first month has passed since the end of the earthquake, World Vision confirms that it will take years to restore a sense of hope among children, and therefore gives priority to education in emergencies in this new phase. The organization aims to provide psychosocial support to the entire school community (children, parents, caregivers and teachers), providing supplies and uniforms, rehabilitating school infrastructure, temporary classrooms, and child protection.

“Restoring the right to education is the most effective way to anticipate and prevent the risks of irregular migration and forced displacement that many earthquake-affected families can take into account,” said World Vision Regional Director for External Engagement in Latin America and the Caribbean Michelle Mitchell. “We call on neighboring countries to keep regular migration and asylum pathways open, and to ensure that Venezuelan children have access to education, protection and psychosocial support on an equal basis with children in host communities.”

At the local level, the organization urges not only the rebuilding of infrastructure, but also the strengthening of national capacities to ensure children’s access to education during an emergency.

The school year in Venezuela ended last July, and in the wake of the earthquake, the country is facing severe challenges due to damage to more than 1,000 buildings, including 400 educational centers, according to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
