The state has a new tsunami simulator Northwest Regional News

The state Department of Natural Resources has released a new series of tsunami inundation simulations for the port of Grace and Willapa Bay, which show the estimated elevation and wave velocity after a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

“The videos show the estimated arrival times of the tsunami waves after the earthquake and either the detailed local tsunami amplitude and flooding or the current velocity (wave velocity) of coastal areas along Port Grace and Yelapa Bay,” said Washington Geological Survey tsunami geologist Alex Dolcimascolo.

The video simulations of less than three minutes show how tsunami wave heights change throughout the entire tsunami period, increasing and decreasing over a period of approximately eight hours.

Grays Harbor video shows levels of inundation east to Cosmopolis. About an hour after the 9.0 earthquake, Westport, Ocean Shores, Ocosta, Hookiame and Bormann Airport experience inundation of several feet.

An hour later, another big surge occurred with deeper floods reaching Aberdeen and Cosmopolis. The increases continue in elevation and for five hours in parts of Hokkiam, Aberdeen and Cosmopolis can experience floods of 10 feet or more. The video ends eight hours after the earthquake and details torrential inundation in Ocosta, Markham, and parts of Aberdeen and Hocame.

Willapa Bay videos are split into two separate presentations, North and South. The northern map includes Tuckland, North Cove, Raymond, South Bend, and Bay Center. The southern map shows Ilwaco, Naselle, Long Beach, and Ocean Park. Eight hours after the earthquake, all of these areas could see inundations of 10 feet or more, higher along the immediate coast and river canals.

This simulation is designed to give emergency planners and communities the best possible visual information about the impacts of the tsunami and its timing so that they can plan accordingly, according to the Natural Resources Statement.

The tsunami struck the Washington coast several times during our geological history. Public Land Commissioner Hillary Franz said: It’s a matter of when, not whether, she’ll hit the next stage. “These videos are designed to give the communities that will be most affected by the tsunami waves an insight into which areas are likely to face the most damage so that they can ensure that their residents, businesses and institutions are safe and resilient.”

All of these simulation videos are available on the Natural Resources YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKpn_ilWjh51SEKRBO9mFJx688fjzYkJm.

320 years since the last Cascadia quake

The last earthquake of magnitude 9 Cascadia hit the subduction zone in 1700 and produced a tsunami that left sandy deposits and sunken forests, which can still be seen in places like the Kobalis Ghost Forest in Grace Harbor County. The geological record shows the Cascadia Subduction Zone – the offshore region where the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate erupts beneath the larger North America plate – producing massive earthquakes every 300 to 600 years, according to Natural Resources. There have been about 40 earthquakes in the subduction zone in the last 10,000 years.

More information on the tsunami is available online

The video simulation adds to the tsunami preparation kit developed by geologists within the DNR’s Washington Geological Survey.

More detailed tsunami hazard maps, along with evacuation maps, preparation tips and additional information about this simulation are available online at https://www.dnr.wa.gov/tsunami.

Preparation

The State Department of Emergency Management (EMD) is hosting a webinar on preparedness on Thursday September 17 at 11:30 a.m.

“For the month of National Preparedness in September, EMD is participating a few local jurisdictions in a two-part webinar series entitled Re-Prepare,” said Elisa Tabiro, EMD Tsuanmi Program Coordinator. “The purpose of these webinars is to encourage everyone to reassess their preparedness, review their family plan, and restock their disaster toolkits.”

Even in times of pandemic, an emergency kit can often be housed with items already in the home. The webinar will cover that, and include mental and emotional resilience, identifying household risks, and how to talk to others about disaster preparedness.

Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
