A magnitude 4.2 earthquake shakes the Istanbul region

An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale jolted Istanbul on Thursday afternoon, 4:38 pm local time. The quake scared locals in the most populous city for a moment.

The earthquake hit the Marmara Sea off the coastal town of Marmara Erglici, at a depth of 6.8 kilometers.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.

Earthquakes of recent magnitude do not usually come with much danger but since the region is highly affected by the active and dangerous Anatolian Fault System which can produce destructive earthquakes of magnitude six to seven.

Istanbul has a population of 15 million and is the most populous city in Turkey. Experts expected the city to be hit by a major earthquake at any time.

Several studies have shown that a major earthquake is inevitable, and the question is not whether or not it will be a major tremor but more time will happen.

Last year, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the city, the largest in the city’s memory. The tremors were mild, but they pushed people out on the streets in panic for their safety.

Istanbul earthquake forecast

On January 24, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake jolted Elazig Province, killing dozens. Days after the disaster, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu announced a frightening expectation that Istanbul would prepare for a 7.5 magnitude earthquake.

The Turkish scientific community agrees that a major earthquake is bound to happen in Istanbul. In the next 30 years, the probability of a 7.4 magnitude tremor is roughly 35 to 40 percent.

Experts say that a major earthquake in or around Istanbul occurs every 250 years. The last major event happened 254 years ago, and it reached a magnitude of 6.4. Another earthquake in 1509 had a greater magnitude: 7.0 and Turkish folklore calls it “Little Judgment Day”.

Istanbul is located on the western side of the North Anatolian Fault. The fault caused five severe tremors. In 1939, the country suffered a magnitude 7.2 of the Erzincan earthquake, while the Marmara earthquake in 1999 had a magnitude of 7.6.

The Ministry of Environment and Urbanization said that in preparation for the major earthquake, successive AKP governments have allocated approximately 4.3 billion liras, or $ 724 million, to replace or 56,000 risky infrastructure.

The mayor of Istanbul, Akram Imamoglu, said that the allocations are not sufficient because a large earthquake may affect or even cause tens of thousands of deaths. “Our priority is to make Istanbul a disaster-resistant city,” the mayor said.

The Kandilli Observatory and the Institute for Seismological Research estimate that if it is 7.5.
