The Tokyo Olympics torch relay determines when to resume

The Tokyo Olympic torch relay will resume on March 25 and follow its originally planned course and schedule, starting in Fukushima Prefecture.

Organizers are discussing adjustments to the torch relay due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Possible changes include the number of officials and personnel involved and the reduction in the size of vehicle convoys.

As it stands, the relay will visit all 47 prefectures of Japan with a focus on the area affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.

Under the slogan “Hope Enlightens Our Way”, she will visit the three prefectures most affected by the tsunami and earthquake (Fukushima (25-27 March), Iwate (June 16-18) and Miyagi (June 19-21)) for three days each.

The relay leads to the opening ceremony on July 23.

The torch relay originally started on March 12 in Olympia. The Greek portion of the relay, originally scheduled for eight days, was canceled on March 13 due to the pandemic after actor Gerard Butler was among the torchbearers in Sparta.

An unexpectedly large crowd gathered in Sparta despite recommendations for the audience not to focus on the ceremony.

The torch remained in Greece until it was transferred to Japan as scheduled on March 20.

On March 24, it was announced that the Tokyo Games would be postponed to 2021. The Japan part of the torch relay was suspended as well, two days before its start.
