SpaceX provides Starlink satellites to help Washington State cities go online after wildfires

SpaceX lends a helping hand to Washington state cities that have been devastated by recent wildfires.

Washington’s Department of Emergency Management is using the company’s Starlink satellites to provide public Wi-Fi access in Malden, Washington, where a massive fire destroyed 80% of the small town earlier this month. Satellites are also in use in western Washington near Lake Bonnie, Washington, and SpaceX offers the service for free.

Starlink is the broadband internet constellation of SpaceX which now consists of more than 600 spacecraft in low Earth orbit. SpaceX is close to launching a commercial limited service, which was pledged early this year. Ultimately, Starlink aims to provide global access to the broadband internet, and there are military applications as well. Amazon is also developing its own constellation called Project Kuiper.

The Starlink satellites are being manufactured at SpaceX’s facility in Redmond, Washington.

Stephen Friedrich, a media officer for the Washington Department of Emergency Management, said that accessing the internet in places like Malden would be nearly impossible without Starlink. This is the first time that the division has used satellites.

“This is a device that we can definitely use if we have more wildfires or even bigger disasters, like the Cascadia earthquake event, where connectivity problems will be a major obstacle,” Friedrich said.
