Shaken and woke up from the earthquake

On Wednesday, September 30, several people were suddenly awakened in the early hours by being shaken by a 4.5-magnitude earthquake that struck about 20 kilometers south of Malta. This is not the first event of its kind, however, and the rarity of such an experience surprises many people. More than 1,700 people have filled out a seismic report for the Seismology and Research Group (SMRG) at the University of Malta.

Several reports were submitted within an hour of the earthquake striking after 3 am, while others were filed later after reports on news portals and social media. The earthquake appears to be felt across the archipelago by people. However, the majority of the concrete reports were from people living in the central, southern and southeastern regions of Malta. Less reports came from Gozo, possibly because these areas are far from the epicenter. These reports provide a snapshot of the residents’ experiences, taking into account the different environments and places in which people live. All reports will be carefully analyzed to identify patterns in the subjective experiences.

Behind the scenes, earthquakes in Malta are constantly monitored by SMRG, which manages the Malta Earthquake Network. This consists of eight seismic stations across the islands. Automatic earthquake detection systems usually detect about three local earthquakes per month, many of which are not felt at all. However, last week, real-time monitoring systems were tested against more intense seismic activity.

On September 30 alone, around 25 earthquakes were detected, some of them falling within minutes of each other. A series of alerts were sent to seismologists who re-analyze and confirm each earthquake. Thanks to the physical reports, seismologists obtain first-hand information from the public about where an earthquake is being felt and thus complete robotic systems.

Seismic activity continues and no more earthquakes in the coming days have been ruled out.
