Three Questions: Sounders at Earthquakes

The Seattle Sounders team got an unexpected rest this week as their game with Colorado Rapids was postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak in Colorado. The Sounders should rest well while they travel to San Jose to face earthquakes on Sunday. The earthquakes come from the 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy in the middle of the week. Alicia Rodriguez of Center Line Soccer asked some questions about earthquakes.

Safest in heart: September was a lively month for San Jose. Four defeats with more than 5 goals permitted in each match, including a 7–1 loss. Lots of teams were faltering and falling back on results like this, including possibly the dismissal of their coach. Since then, there have been four wins out of five and it has made the Galaxy look silly. What’s the biggest change?

Soccer midfield: It’s hard to say exactly what has changed, because teams generally don’t hit a slippage that bad and out of it. For me, there are two factors – one is tangible and the other is intangible.

Chris Wondolowski told reporters after Wednesday’s victory over the Galaxy that the team had adjusted their pressure and figured out how to regain its tempo on that front. He said, “… when our defensive pressure got right, we won the ball in better areas. When you do, you are able to create more chances, be able to have the ball in their own half and be able to unlock the defense and also wear them out.” (From this story). So the defensive system, which is the club’s tactical backbone, needed some kind of reset or something then they did and it worked. Noteworthy when earthquakes were at their lowest, Wondolowski and the rest of the club responded, “We need to do what we do * more *”, not to change the system itself.

The other change is that San Jose finds its energy again. When they were struggling, they were unable to make their mark in matches and did not appear to be able to take on their opponents. For a team who knows they have a talent gap with most competitors, energy is the factor that gives them any chance at all. And so when the energy came back, they started picking up results again. It really is intangible, but somehow, the more seriously working mantra has pulled them out of their hook, which is pretty cool.

Sohail: What impressed me most about earthquakes last month was the goal scoring by the committee. Is this by design? Is this Matthias Almeida’s system at its best?

CLS: I think any team would like a top scorer, but it seems that Almeida is not overly concerned about achieving a particular player’s goals, and since Wendolovsky is out of his Golden Boot days, Earthquakes has always been built on burden sharing, regardless the coach.

But I think this team is much more equal in their approach when it comes to goals compared to most teams. They succeed when they shoot for volume and are given the green light to pretty much every player who thinks they are on range. Lately, an interesting trend has been the goals the full-back has scored – Marcus Lopez, Paul Marie, Tommy Thompson and Nick Lima have scored in their last five matches. Lima told reporters that these are not specific tactical instructions and just that the players have an opportunity to take advantage of them. But it does highlight that Earthquakes are not a team where you can distinguish the star and largely stop the attack, given that there is no dominant star.

Sah: There is half a month left in the season and you are two points above the match streak. What does the “good” season look like for San Jose in 2020?

CLS: Conducting the qualifiers is minimal goals and definitely attainable at this point, although it would probably be a crazy dash to the end. Personally, I think qualifying to the qualifiers and winning the post-season match would be a reasonable goal to score between earthquakes, especially given that they have been counted nationally for most of the year. I think that would show progress being made under Almeida, and with some real spending behind the team, we hope, in the off-season, they’ll really pay to climb the standings in their third season here. we will see.
