Portland is situated in a flat, flawless basin directed northwest where it meets the rugged terrain of the Coast Range. These faults tend to be subject to pressure as well as sideways movement due to a combination of tectonic forces. Long-range fault movements often leave an unmistakable linear mark on the landscape, although the tremendous humidity and vegetation of this area do a very good job of hiding things. However, some of these faults can be recognized in a landscape if you know how to look.

This includes the Jalis Creek Fault 35 kilometers (22 miles) west of Portland. A team from Portland State University led by Alison Hurst set out to dig a small trench through this bug to examine its history. Since it can be recognized in landscapes, it has been assumed to be an active bug, but little is known after this. By digging trenches across the crack at the surface, sediment and soil patterns can reveal movements during past earthquakes. Look for a few bits of organic matter in there, and the dating can tell you the carbon when it occurred.

Read between the lines

After digging through the fault, some layers of soil jumped on the researchers. The alternating colors and sediment contents highlighted unusual patterns, such as the stratum topsoil buried beneath the existing topsoil – which can occur when fault movement opens up an area that the sediment fills. One of the layers also contains a mixture of gravel that appears to be rolled downhill during the shaking of the earthquake.

There were also minute vertical defects that disrupted these layers and this is where the geological deduction begins. If a fault breaks through one layer but stops at the base of the next layer up, that top layer should be added after the crack has occurred. Using these spatial relationships, the researchers identified three different earthquakes. The carbon dating of the bushfire cutoff between each of those earthquakes places them about 1,000 years ago, 4,200 years ago, and 8,800 years ago. So on average, there have been about 4,000 years between major earthquakes on this fault.

The fault also appears to have moved about one meter during the earthquake. All this roughly corresponds to estimates based on things like horizontal displacement in the flows crossing the error. These estimates place the average occurrence of earthquakes around 3,000 years and 1.7 meters of movement. If the 73-kilometer fault moved completely during one of these earthquakes, it would have a magnitude of 7.1-7.4. It is possible that only parts of the error would have moved in each event, resulting in a smaller scale. This can be tested by digging more trenches like this and looking for differences between them.

The bottom line here is that this fault is very active and capable of creating a magnitude 7 earthquake. It is not the only mistake in this area. Major earthquakes can be rare enough that the real danger is more important than the events we have experienced, requiring us to discover and learn from prehistoric times. For Portland, this includes more than just the great marine earthquake that worries everyone.
