A strong M6.0 earthquake strikes off the coast of Iwate Prefecture, Japan

A strong earthquake recorded by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) as a M6.0 struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture, Honshu at 12:08 UTC (21:08 JMA) on 1 July 2026. The agency reported a depth of 40 km (25 miles). The USGS registered this earthquake as M5.9 at a depth of 37 km (23 miles).

The epicenter was located about 55 km (34 mi) east of Noda (population 4,201), 58 km (36 mi) east of Koji (population 34,418), 75 km (45 mi) northeast of Miyako (population 51,150), and 88 km (55 mi) east of Hashinohe (population 239,046), Japan.

There is no threat of a tsunami from this earthquake.

According to USGS PAGER, it is estimated that 849,000 people felt mild shivering, and 3.2 million people felt weak.

The US Geological Survey issued a green alert for shaking-related deaths and economic losses. There is a low possibility of casualties and damage.

In general, residents in this area reside in structures resistant to seismic vibrations, although there are structures at risk. The predominant weak building types are heavy timber frames and reinforced/reinforced masonry.
