15 homes likely uninhabitable after heavy rains, floods north of Wellington

Flash floods north of Wellington left up to 15 homes uninhabitable, affected 50 more homes, and closed State Highway 1 for nearly two hours.

Anita Baker, the mayor of Burreiro, said a care point had been set up at the Plemmerton fire station, and help was available if people needed housing. There was a shortage of accommodations so people should stay with friends and family if possible.

She said emergency services were busy pumping flood water from homes, and southward in Titahi Bay, treated sewage was flowing into the bay due to the overflowing water.

“It received water from more than 15 homes across their living areas and damaged their properties making them uninhabitable,” said Carl Mills, chief fire officer in Plimmerton, who was at the scene.

“[It is] “It’s a very big event, and it’s something we can’t prevent,” Mills said.

The scale of the flood seemed to take even the firefighters by surprise. “We’ve never had floods, in 25 years here, that hit the rise in home living, which is a bit unexpected,” Mills said.

Airlie Road resident Ian Capwell has lived in the area for more than 50 years and has been a volunteer firefighter for 30 of them. He had never seen a high flood in Belmerton.

He was out of town on Sunday morning when he received a call from his daughter: “She said, ‘You better go home, the water is about to enter the house.’

By the time he got home, around midday, the sun had gone down but the water was running through every room. Sunday was aware of the damage.

Meanwhile, SH1 has been closed due to flooding from Plimmerton to Paekākāriki, north of Wellington, with no diversions available for about two hours Sunday morning, with the Plimmerton roundabout underwater. The cars are now allowed to return.

After heavy rains, the roundabout on State Highway 1 in Belmerton closed due to flooding.

Alternative roads, Highway 58, the road between Parmata and the Hot Valley, as well as the Picakariki Hill Road and the Grace Road, are also closed, with traffic support to Otaki, 33 km north of Baikariki.

Metlink train and bus exchange services between Wellington and Kapiti have been canceled.

MetService readings show that 86 mm of rain fell in the 12 hours to 1 p.m. Sunday at Battle Hill, beside Paekākāriki Hill Road.

During the same period, 50 mm fell in Tawa, 67 mm in Waikana, 55 mm in Burreiro, 51 mm in Paraparaumu, and 46 mm in Levin. Mana Island, offshore from Palmerton, scored 49 mm.

Cars are subsidized north of Otaki due to flooding in the south.

Fire and Emergency said it received 24 triple calls and visited 65 flooded properties around Karehana Bay in Plimmerton on Sunday.

Shift manager Chris Dalton said a mobile communications unit had been set up in Plimmerton to speed up the transmission, with four pumped fire trucks operating.

Dalton said that about 15 homes in the Airlie Road area would likely be left uninhabitable.

“The weather coincided with the high tide, so there was nowhere the water would go,” said Dalton.

SH1 Plimmerton has been closed to Paekakariki due to flooding, as are alternative roads to Paekakariki Hill Rd and Grays Rd.

The rain stopped in the middle of the day, and the rapid response now ended. What remains is to check people’s well-being, and to clean.

As the rains subsided, a heavy rain warning was issued in the Wellington and Tararua Ranges, with heavy rains and strong winds expected tomorrow.
