5.1 earthquake near the Nevada-California line

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook an area near the Nevada-California line and has seen an increase in seismic activity recently.

The US Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at 3:32 p.m. Tuesday, was followed in the next 15 minutes by seven aftershocks from 2.5 to 4.3.

The epicenter was in the ghost town of Candelaria, Nevada – 15 miles south of Mina and about 50 miles east of Lake Mono, California. It was 15 miles from the epicenter of the November 13 and 6.5 on May 15 earthquake (indicated by orange dots on the map above).

The May earthquake was the largest earthquake in Nevada since 1954 and was felt in the Reno Tahoe region and as far away as the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys in California.
