The earthquake scar in front of Christ Church Cathedral is finally healed

A large gap has finally been closed that has remained open in front of Christ Church Cathedral for nearly 10 years.

An 18-ton steel frame was gently lifted to its position on the west façade of the Anglican Cathedral Thursday morning, sealing a gap that opened when the rose window was destroyed following the shock in June 2011.

The 13-meter-high steel frame has a sign printed on the front that repeats the original Gothic façade lost in earthquakes, with stained glass and a pink window.

The cathedral restoration project manager, Keith Patterson, said the steel structure would strengthen the historic building from earthquakes, make it weatherproof, and banish the bathroom that made his home in the saucer.

The tire was lifted into place Thursday morning.

The steel frame will remain in place and become a permanent part of a restored cathedral.

He said: “It is part of the stability of the cathedral and has a goal to rebuild it later.”

“It will fix the western end of the cathedral in the first case and then it will house the pink window.”

Patterson said raising the steel frame in place was a “defining moment” in the restoration of the cathedral.

The frame will protect the building from the elements, keep the bathroom out and make it more earthquake resistant.

“It will look much better now. This will improve the atmosphere of the square and make the site look good.”

The frame was secured to the cathedral using special mounts that attached to parts of the building that were affected by earthquakes in the 1990s.

Patterson said it was good to see the West Front closed again.

The cathedral is being reinforced by earthquakes as part of a $ 154.3 million restoration project.
