Visit Portugal, lesson in the promotion of telecommuting worker tourism


Dec 20, 2020 – Tourism promotion in the era of Corona has been a challenge. One of the tourist boards was doing things well – lessons from Portugal.

Is it worth it even to promote tourism during a pandemic, with the uncertainty of future travel?

This year has seen unprecedented challenges for the tourism sector, from event management to marketing and promotion. While many destinations have chosen to stay calm or participate in campaigns like #CroatiaLongDistanceLove, the best Croatian destination for 2020 promotion in my opinion has been Zagreb, and the Croatian capital has brilliantly responded to the pandemic and earthquake disasters with some very innovative marketing on a budget. Campaigns like Zagreb Loves You, From Zagreb Balconies, and the new Around Zagreb platform are just some examples.

One of the tourist countries emerged for me in 2020 for its tourism promotion. So much so that we decide to visit when we’re again moving to that overseas vacation – Portugal.

Portugal first appeared on my tourism radar this year in April, as it was the first country, along with South Africa, to publish a promotional video targeting a post-Corona world, with a captive global audience locked in and eager to travel.

Videos of Portugal and South Africa emerged at the time as beacons of hope and positivity. I remember discussing Portugal as a place to visit with the family several times over lunch.

And as we near the end of the year, Visit Portugal is making big appearances in my social media feed. Either Facebook has been listening to our family’s lunch conversations, or maybe our coverage of nomads is the culprit, but I’ve been saturated with Visit Portugal ads for the past 24 hours, which are different ads every time I go to Facebook.

So why visit Portugal if you are working remotely? Maybe the food. Head to Algarve and 10 Michelin-starred restaurants.

You are probably hiker. Over 190 miles of trails to explore when your laptop is closed.

I am looking for a little sport and socially distant after work. No place is as socially remote as golf, and the Algarve is one of the first golfing regions in Europe.

Or what better way to start the day in the Lisbon area than surfing a bit from one of the 25 surfing spots.

What I especially liked was that each ad led to the same landing page, which summarized the tourism offer for Visit Portugal in 12 sections, each with a short intro paragraph and a dedicated promotional video: Lisbon and Porto; Sun, sea and beach, hiking and cycling trips.
