Filipinos were reminded to stay safe with the earthquake greeting them on Christmas Day

Filipinos urged each other to keep themselves safe after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Batangas on Christmas Day.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded the earthquake at 7:43 am. The epicenter was 10 kilometers north of Calatagan, Batangas at a depth of 74 kilometers.

The institute said it did not expect any damage from the quake, but the public anticipated the aftershocks.

No tsunami warnings were received.

The earthquake was also felt by some residents in the National Capital Region and adjacent areas such as Laguna and Rizal.

It reportedly lasted for about a minute.

Then the Filipinos reminded each other to keep safe as aftershocks are expected from the earthquake that woke some people.

This prompted the word “Ingat” (be careful) to hit the top of the trends list on local Twitter Friday morning.

The official Colegio de San Juan Letran Twitter account reminded the public to practice the three safety measures during the earthquake.

Light Rail Transit Line 2 operations were temporarily suspended starting at 9:18 a.m. after the earthquake.

“Our Engineering, Maintenance, Safety and Security team is currently conducting a periodic foot inspection to assess the integrity of LRT-2 structures,” said LRT-2 on Twitter.

“Get ready for more updates. Keep yourself safe!” Her consultant added.

In the event of an earthquake, the public is advised to fall, cover and hold or find a safe place away from potential objects that may fall during shaking.

Those who are out of buildings and homes should immediately find an open area where there is no risk of things falling.
